Every day, most people spend approximately eight to 12 hours in their office. If you think about it, a large chunk of the time is spent sitting on chairs. The majority of people work, eat, attend meetings, and sometimes even give presentations while sitting down. That is way too much immobility for anyone’s good! 

If you are guilty of the same and want to change things around, you must know that it is not too late. Fortunately, incorporating small habitual changes can significantly help you stay fit and improve your overall health. From procuring the right office chairs to changing the way you commute to work, the changes mentioned below will undoubtedly help you get back into shape.

Commute Actively

First, you have to change how you get to work, especially if you live within 5 kilometres of your office. You can easily swap the car for a bike and cover the distance by doing one of the best whole-body exercises – cycling. 

Even if you live more than five kilometers away, there is a way for you to cover half the distance on your bike. Try and find someone you know along your office route and see if they agree to keep your bike at their place. Alternatively, you can also try a parking area. That way, you can cover half the course in your car and the other half on the bike. 

Cycling is one of the most eco-friendly ways to travel, which is enough reason to make this shift.  

Take the Stairs

Taking the stairs is the most underrated way to stay in shape. You may say that your floor is too high up to reach via the stairs. While that may be true, you can always start small. For example, if your office is on the tenth floor, climb the stairs of the first four floors and gradually increase the number.  

You might feel that it is not worth the effort. But when you contemplate the health risks associated with leading a sedentary lifestyle, all these efforts will seem minimal.

Change That Chair

Most offices will have ergonomic chairs. Ergonomic office chairs are specifically designed keeping in mind the necessities of their users. A poorly made chair that does not provide adequate lumbar support can hamper a person’s posture. 

Admittedly, you may not understand the ill effects right away, but the consequences will take a toll on your health with time. It might, in turn, affect your productivity in the office as well. Therefore, you must have the right kind of office chair.

Take a Stroll

The words “stroll” and “office” might not seem too congruent. But if you consider the number of times one has to make telephone calls during office hours to colleagues on the same or different floors, you will discover good opportunities for taking brisk walks. 

Of course, it might not be feasible to replace all the telephone calls with face-to-face interactions, but you can do it at least three to four times a day.

Set a Timer for Breaks

It might seem counterintuitive, but taking short breaks throughout the day keeps you physically active. It also helps in increasing productivity levels. 

Understandably, you might forget to take breaks, especially while working on challenging projects. So, to overcome this, you may set a timer or specific alarms throughout the day reminding you to take breaks. These breaks don’t necessarily have to be for hours. Even a five-minute walk around the campus can leave you feeling refreshed.
