It is very well known that a mother’s milk or breastmilk is the most healthy and natural nourishment required by a baby because it comprises all the minerals and vitamins needed. But in addition to that, have you ever wondered that there is a possibility that a newborn baby might need extra supplements to promote physical and mental growth? The answer to this is yes; according to pediatrics, some babies need extra supplements; hence they advise Holle formula.

So what exactly is this Holle formula? Holle formula, also known as Holle Bio Stage 1 Organic Infant Milk Formula, is a preservative-free, completely organic formula specially formulated for babies aged six months. The aim of this is to provide a nutritious meal with healthy ingredients for the early development of infants.

Ingredients of Holle Formula:

Holle Formula is made with 99 % organic ingredients; the skim milk used in this is taken from cows raised on biodynamic (Demeter) farms. Additionally, they have organic maltodextrin starch from corn, organic whey powder, DHA, organic vegetable oils, and other important vitamins and minerals necessary for a baby’s development.

Holle and European formulas are quite common among many other baby formulas. Often, baby formulas are used as an alternative to breastmilk but as already mentioned above; a pediatrician should consult this first.

Difference between Holle and European formula:

The basic difference between European baby formula and Holle formula is that European formulas include lactose obtained from cows and milk obtained from other animals like goats. Most parents abroad prefer European formulas because it is believed that these are of higher quality and the regulations for this formula are stricter.

Several studies have also been made to find out just what is it exactly that makes European baby formula different from other formulas? And it was found that the European formula follows the guidelines laid out by the EU, whereas the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has its own set of different guidelines. Hence, there is quite a difference between both of the product’s ingredients, the concentration of milk etc.

The European formulas are better because many of them include goat milk or milk from the pasteurized cow, and they’re free from GMOs. And usually, their primary sugar is lactose. On the other hand, the Holle formula, which is based on German food regulations, is considered the highest quality.

Preparation of Holle Formula:

Preparing the Holle formula is as easy as it ever could be, but we need to keep certain things in mind:

  1. The first step is to carefully read the chart and determine water ratios depending on your child’s age.
  2. Add the powder to a bottle, add warm water close and then shake it properly until no lumps are left, and the formula has dissolved completely.
  3. Lastly, you need to check the temperature. It should not be too hot. Ideally, when the formula reaches body temperature (-98oF), it is ready for feeding.

You can always test the formula under your forearm to get accurate ideas about the temperature. It is also advised to use the formula minimum of 2 hours after preparation. And it is strictly advised not to add any other additional supplements to the formula.

History of Holle Formula:

Holle was first founded in Arlesheim as Holle food AG. Soon after that, the first Holle wholemeal bread and the first Holle organic baby food were produced. This makes Holle one of the very first organic baby food producers in Europe because, till the 1960s, Holle was available exclusively in Switzerland, and the original products include several cereal-based foods for bottle feed to babies and porridge or Cerelac, which could be either used with fresh fruit or milk.

Then as Holle flourished, it became the first dementia company. In the late sixties, Holle expanded its reach to the German market, and in the eighties, new markets in Europe were established. In the nineties, Holle expanded its range of products and introduced infant formulas containing 99% of organic materials.

Expansion of Holle:

Then production lines were established in Germany and within the EU. The current managing directors were convinced that biodynamic baby food and formulas are the future of their company. Hence, they will play an important role in providing the children with healthy food. And as a result, Holle baby food GmbH was founded.

In the 2000s, the market expanded gradually in Europe; starting in Spain, Portugal, and Greece, Holle spread its wings in England, Ireland, and Iceland. Later Holle expanded globally and is now accessible in Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

In 2012 the company also carried out its first-ever comprehensive CO2 audit to measure its factory and carbon footprint. And then, Holle started establishing markets in China and ever since then, Holle’s products have been in high demand. Expanding its reach even more in the eighteenth year, Holle’s organic pioneer went a step ahead and produced the first-ever CO2 neutral Demeter milk and infant formula on the market.

Holle promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly farming and has recently self-audited its global manufacturing infrastructure to reduce CO2 emissions. Holle’s entire range of products and line of production is entirely organic, sugar and corn syrup free.

Alternatively, beyond cow milk, Holle has also started to specialize in a variety of organic goat milk formulas, which are a helpful and healthy alternative for newborns as it is very easy to digest and also have a respectable amount of milk proteins.

Holle formula is designed and developed to closely resemble the natural breast milk nutrient, and protein composition is kept almost the same. And hence Holle only uses lactose from biodynamically skimmed milk that contains important nutrients that help in babies’ early age physical and mental development.

In a nutshell, it can be said that, although breastfeeding is considered to be the best formula food and nutrition for the newborns due to, some challenges faced by women post breastfeeding sometimes makes them shift to baby formulas. Formulas are a healthy alternative for moms who can’t breastfeed or those who choose not to.

Because formulas are designed to replicate breastmilk in the best possible way, they provide the baby with all the nutrients and minerals they need to grow and thrive. Another important reason is some babies cannot digest cow’s milk properly, and therefore it is advisable to use infant formulas which use goat milk. But before taking any of these decisions, one must always consult with a pediatrician about what is suitable and required by your child.
